Going on a FAST for weight loss?
I should probably consult with a doctor about this, but yahoo! answers hardly fails me, so... I am 18 years old in college and 200 pounds and a guy who is 5'7", just FYI. I have been struggling with my weight for quite some time now. Last semester, I put a lot of hard work into it, and it certainly helped, but not enough. Then, over the holiday break, without good cooking options (long story), I was restricted to fast foods; furthermore, I couldn't get to a gym. So I lost a lot of my work I had done. I know I need to persevere and work even harder, but I have started thinking about fasting in order to aid me with this process. I've been told that fasting pretty much resets your metabolism, and weight loss becomes much easier to facilitate, especially with changes in appetite. I am seriously considering this sometime in the near future. 1. Has anyone ever fasted before? 2. Do you know anyone who's fasted before? 3. How long should I fast in order to achieve desired results? 4. What should I supplement myself with? Obviously lots of water, but what kinds of juice or vitamins? 5. Should I exercise when I'm fasting? 6. Basically, how can I go about this in the most healthy and beneficial way? And if you have any other pearls of wisdom or web links, please share them. Thanks! Can I still drink green tea? I am addicted to caffeine, and I am unwilling to quit it. I have even quit caffeine before for about 3 months, but you can noticeably tell a difference, and with life the way it is, I need to be alert and energized.

When you go on a stravation diet does the body burn fat first or muscle?
I read in a article that muscle is actually spared as much as posibble and fasting for weight loss is ok as long as you chage your eating habits once you are of the fast.

Is there a harm in running fast for weight loss, if I can run for an hour?
I regularly go to the gym and trying to lose overall body fat, but especially around the belly. I tried walking/jogging slowly but it bores me down and I cannot continue after half an hour. Instead, If I run faster, such that my heart-beat is always in the range of 140-170, I really enjoy it. I sweat like anything and it's a very satisfying workout at the end. In my current situation I can run for a good 40-50 minutes at a stretch on a elliptical (depending on the resistance level, I can run at speeds from 5mph to upto 8 or 9 at the peak), or if I'm a bit tired on a given day, then I can do 2 sets totaling 50-60 minutes. In a way you can say that I sprint but with larger intervals, where I build speed gradually rather than short duration sprinting. Usually when I start, I take about 5 minutes to warm up where I gradually build speed. After that I pretty much follow my heart. If I feel like running really really fast, I do ... I continue at 7-8 mph for up to 3 minutes, I try to run as fast as I possibly can and then I slow down to catch my breath. I keep doing this altering speeds throughout. somewhere around the end I push myself to the limits and hit 9mph and stay there for like a minute or as long as I can. Fast music like trance or speed metal really helps with the speed, it almost acts like a trigger as the music gets faster your speed gets faster and its lot of fun. Elliptical is really gentle on the joints, so I don't have to worry about blowing up my knee cap or something. The problem though is that I haven't been able to lose any fat, and have not even lost a single pound, I am overweight so, I know that there is definitely scope of losing some pounds. I'm just curious what others think. Should I change my strategy? or continue with this one and hope that it will help in the long run. ................................................................................. Thanks so much for such quick responses :) and for sharing your opinion. Lot of good suggestions. I will continue my current work-out for now, but will also try sprinting. I think the bottom line is you have to keep trying different things so you can learn which works for you. The extra fat is the result of 2-3 years of carelessness and irregular habits. Its not reasonable to expect it to just go away in a few months. Better to go with good habits that you can continue in the long run, rather than trying too hard and giving it all up.
