So, you have decided that some weight loss is the right way for you to go.


What are the odds that you will become another statistic and end up disappointed and frustrated? There follow some suggestions to help stack those odds in your favour.


The simplicity referred to in the title, means those ideas which we all accept as true. To effectively lose weight in a healthy manner, we must develop our behaviour so that we expend more energy in living than we take in as food. Simple? Yes, so why do so many of us find it so difficult to put into practice? The short answer is habits; nothing more or less than those things we do on a regular basis, most of which take little or no thinking.


How many of your habits contribute to taking in more calories than you need to power your day? Cakes or cookies with your coffee? Regular sodas throughout the day? An extra plate of dessert? Too much wine or beer? Not difficult to spot the problem there: even as I write, those 'habits' all say pleasure to me.


The real problem comes if you try to change a number of 'bad' habits all at once. The stress is usually too much, you crack and wind up not changing any. To change a habit, it needs to be replaced by another, which can become just as automatic. For example, replace your first soda of the day with carbonated water. So much less sugar and just as thirst-quenching.


Why not eat an apple 15 minutes before your coffee? Not so much fun at first, but hunger pangs gone. Perhaps leave the sugar and or cream out of the coffee as well? But - and I suggest that this is a big But - change one habit at a time.


Do not try the second change until the first one is properly fixed into your regular behaviour pattern. You are not likely to see dramatic effects with these ideas, but they are so important that I would suggest that you congratulate and reward yourself for each permanent change. Our habits are what 'shape' us in the long term, so working on them can make real changes.


Do not be impatient with yourself if the changes do not come as easily as you hoped. When you have decided that a change is worthwhile, you might need to try two or three new alternatives if one habit is very pleasurable.


Your long term healthy weight control is very well worth the effort of finding the answers which suit you.
